Gumtree’s product range, glueboards, also goes by “glue traps” or “sticky traps.” In this article, we explore the world of sticky traps, which are an important tool in the integrated pest management of IPM.

Sticky traps are glue-based traps often used in agricultural, garden, household, and commercial pest control to capture and monitor insect pests. However, some sticky traps also capture non-insect pets such as mice, rats, and scorpions.

To protect their sticky surface, manufacturers make sticky traps on cardboard or plastic bases with a thin or thick sticky glue layer.

Though most sticky traps are odor-free, some of them may be scented to attract insects. Pheromone traps include a sticky liner inside a trap and attract target insect species through the pheromone lure, species-specific to insects. Pheromone lures are available for agricultural and horticultural crop pests and stored product insects

Sticky traps easily capture pests like cockroaches, spiders, stored product pests, crawling insects, mites, and scorpions. However, sticky traps are less effective at catching insects like bed bugs. Yellow sticky traps for insects are the ultimate solution that combines visual attraction (or yellow color) to trap the insects on the glue.

Sticky traps are helpful for continuously checking an area for crawling insects and non-insect pests. As a result, pest management professionals (PMPs) regularly employ them to improve their capacity to find pests during pest management inspections.

A pest control inspector can use sticky traps to detect active pests at night or when no one is around.

Can sticky traps get rid of pests?

By their nature, sticky traps catch and immobilize pests and thus help control them. The effectiveness of controlling pests with sticky traps is a product of the pest species, type of trap, number of traps used, pest population, and other factors like rain. In large-scale sticky trap deployment, it is possible to control pests without relying on pesticides or other methods.

Sticky traps, typically, aren’t particularly effective at getting rid of little insects or mite pests as such creatures can occur in extremely large populations. Their best use against stored product insect pests is for pest detection and tracking changes in pest abundance in combination with available pheromone lures of the target stored product insect pest. Placing numerous sticky traps containing pheromone lures in a space is a common method for identifying the origin of an insect infestation.

However, when employed by a skilled individual, glue traps for managing vertebrate pests (such as mice or rats) can offer efficient management.

Where do you use sticky traps?

You deploy sticky traps indoors or outdoors based on their suitability.

Rodent traps: Most nuisance insects and rodents like to move in shadows and along edges. Therefore, the optimal spot for a sticky trap is out of the way and close to a wall, in the case of the Rattrap box, Rat Trap Mini, and the Rap Trap Max.

Cockroach traps: In the case of the Roach Trapp, to make it simple for cockroaches to enter it, the two open ends of the trap should be placed parallel to the wall.

The number of spots you have for placement and the number of Roach trapps you want to check frequently will determine how many such traps you can set.

Cockroaches can be captured with Roach trapps in cupboards, under sinks, and behind stoves and refrigerators.

Sticky traps for houseflies: Fly traps are effective outdoors or indoors, depending on their type. Fly bags and jars are outdoor traps whereas fly strips are suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Gumtree’s fly trap max is an outdoor trap though you can occasionally use it indoors.

Fly control boards: Fly control boards, or universal glueboards, work inside electric flycatchers (EFCs), where the UV light of the trap attracts houseflies and traps them on the sticky surface of the universal glueboards.

Delta-traps: Delta traps with a triangular cross-sectional shape are effective only with a sticky liner and a pheromone lure. They are useful both outdoors and indoors. The Gumtree Delta trap in the corrugated plastic board is reusable multiple times though you must change the pheromone lure inside as per the pheromone lure manufacturer’s instructions.

Sticky traps should typically be placed at least 5 to 10 feet apart in locations where pests are prone to migrate.

Sticky traps for brown recluses and other spiders work well along garage and interior wall surfaces in storage and living spaces.

Sticky traps also work well for catching outdoor cockroaches, beetles, crickets, scorpions, and other crawling insects.

You can use sticky traps by placing them on the opposite side of exterior doors or other exterior pest access sites. You can also place sticky traps in bite-prone areas, next to attic entrances, or next to fireplaces where birds may nest to keep an eye out for any biting mites.

Are sticky traps and glue traps the same thing?

Although glue traps are sticky, the word “glue trap” is typically used for more intensive pest control and trapping operations, like catching mice and rats.

Typically, a thicker, stickier glue layer is placed on a rigid plastic tray to create glue traps on the sticky rat traps.

Although practical, glue traps are less effective than snap traps at catching rodents. Since glue traps for vertebrates do not immediately kill the intended pest, some people view their use as distasteful or inhumane.

Professional rodent bait stations occasionally utilize glue traps and sticky boards to contain biohazards like hair and feces while also making getting rid of the trapped rats and mice easier.

Since glue boards have a more extensive base than light-duty sticky traps, many crawling insects may be enticed to avoid the glue surface if light-duty sticky traps are not accessible.

Glue boards can be messier and more challenging to clean than light-duty cardboard sticky traps. To get glue board glue out of fingers or hair, try cooking oil or a solvent like WD-40.

What stores sell sticky traps?
